(Bulverde, Texas) Saturday, November 8th saw the formal opening of the Bulverde/Spring Branch Library. Jeaniene Jolley gave the invocation, the Smithson Valley High School Navy JROTC presented the colors, and Peaches Kelly rendered the national anthem. Welcomes and congratulations were given by Scott Watson, Bulverde Area Rural Library District; Commissioner Jan Kennady for Comal County; Mayor Ray Jeffrey for the city of Bulverde; and Communication Director, Kari Hutchinson, for the Comal ISD. Tim Derk, San Antonio author, served as master of ceremonies.

Scott Watson and Bev Lemes presented the William J. Cole family a commemorative plaque naming the land on which the library stands the William J. Cole Library Park. Mr. Cole was the Mayor of Bulverde and worked tirelessly to help make this library a reality. In addition, Susan Abelow presented a sculpture to the library district honoring the military, which was unveiled after the ceremonies. This beautiful work of art, created by sculpture artist, Linda Sioux Henley, is located just outside the front entrance to the library.

The Smithson Valley High School Choir and Silver Spurs Dance Team provided entertainment for the event. Later the new Library Director, Susan Herr, was introduced, as was Mary Raley, Chairman of the Capital Campaign and Peggy Hamm, President of the Friends of the Library. It was noted that the Capital Campaign hoped to raise $750,000.00 to provide furniture, landscaping and other items needed for the library. To date, this Campaign has raised over $550,000.00. It was noted that there is still time to donate and/or to buy bricks for the walk.

Scott Watson provided closing remarks and Peaches Kelly sang the much loved “God Bless America.” Afterwards refreshments were served and attendees were urged to tour the various sections of the library. It was estimated that between 150-200 people attended this gala and everyone expressed pride in this beautiful library.
